An- uns Aussichtspunkte / In and Out of Sight
The project An- uns Aussichtspunkte began with the discovery of 24 slides from the 1960s that I found in a private estate. The interesting thing about them was that, in contrast to what was typical for the time and the medium, they did not show holiday photos, but rather insights into an apartment. An unknown photographer had documented his library, living room and bathroom from various angles. In my installation I reconstruct these rooms on the basis of his pictures. For this purpose I position modules with daylight slide viewers in the exhibition space. Their position corresponds exactly to the photographers perspective in the moment of the shot. While the exhibition space seems empty at first, the view into the slide viewer modules plunges you into a typical apartment of the 60s. By closing one eye - like in an analog recording - the respective rooms are faded in or out.
In addition to the numerous photographs of bouquets of flowers, two objects in the apartment caught my attention.1: A black and white television set, a rare prestige object at that time which occurs in half of al pictures. Most of them failed screenshots that try to capture the new tv stars flickering across the screen.2: An illustrated book which I discovered in the estate and also in a photograph of the library. "Our Century in Pictures", provides a visual overview of an entire century within a single 5 cm thick book. Holding this slow media made of paper and the diapositives of the tv screens in my hands I started to wonder how pictures actually travel through time and space? How did and do they enter into our homes? Which links do they create between the public and the private, the past and the present and between our collective and individual memories?
